What Is MetaGravity?
MetaGravity is a London-based deep-tech startup founded in 2021, specializing in virtual world and metaverse infrastructure. In April 2023, the company secured $9.5 million in seed funding from investors including Sino Global Capital, Spartan Group, and Market One Capital. This funding aims to enhance MetaGravity’s engineering and product teams to develop infrastructure capable of supporting over one million concurrent users, along with associated AI and interactive objects.
The company’s flagship product, the HyperScale Engine, addresses the limitations of traditional multiplayer game architectures, which often struggle to support more than 100 concurrent players. Unveiled at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco in March 2024, the HyperScale Engine demonstrated the capability to handle thousands of players engaging in massive multiplayer experiences with high visual fidelity in single-shard worlds.
MetaGravity is a framework or technology ecosystem designed to solve the complex issues of scale, realism, and interactivity in digital spaces. In the metaverse, where millions of users are expected to interact in real-time, traditional computing systems struggle with the load. MetaGravity focuses on creating a decentralized, highly scalable infrastructure that allows for seamless, lag-free interaction among countless users, while also enhancing the visual and functional richness of virtual environments.
Think of MetaGravity as the infrastructure that powers the next generation of virtual worlds. It’s a set of tools and technologies that allow developers to build more expansive and responsive virtual environments, supporting everything from realistic physics to dynamic AI behaviors—all at a scale we’ve never seen before.
MetaGravity’s mission is to build the distributed compute infrastructure for metaverse gaming and virtual world simulations. The platform offers game developers arbitrary scale, transformational cloud cost efficiencies, and is both cloud-agnostic and game-engine agnostic. By focusing on scalability and efficiency, MetaGravity aims to empower developers to create expansive, immersive virtual worlds at a fraction of the cost of alternatives that are currently available.
MetaGravity’s innovative approach to metaverse infrastructure has garnered attention from investors and partners, positioning the company as a key player in the development of scalable, decentralized, and interoperable virtual worlds. Their technology aims to overcome current limitations in multiplayer game architectures, enabling developers to create more immersive and expansive digital experiences.
Scalability: In large-scale games and virtual worlds, the number of users can lead to server overload and lag. MetaGravity uses decentralized cloud computing to distribute the processing load, allowing virtual worlds to expand without compromising performance. This means even if millions of users are online simultaneously, they can still experience smooth interactions without delays.
Hyperscale = more fun?
Enhanced AI and NPC Interactions: In traditional games, non-playable characters (NPCs) often have limited interactivity. MetaGravity has said it plans to leverage advanced AI to give NPCs more realistic and adaptable behaviors, making them more responsive to player actions and creating a more immersive experience. These AI-driven NPCs can learn, respond, and even adapt to the user’s actions, making them feel like real individuals within the virtual environment.
Seamless Large-Scale Experiences: Imagine attending a virtual music festival with millions of other fans without experiencing lag. Or, consider a future where massive online games have persistent worlds that players never need to log out of. MetaGravity makes these scenarios achievable, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in digital spaces.
Empowering Creators and Developers: Developers working on metaverse projects face numerous challenges, from handling server loads to creating engaging environments. MetaGravity provides tools and infrastructure that make it easier for them to build expansive, immersive worlds. This could accelerate the development of creative, out-of-the-box experiences, from interactive museums to virtual cities.
Enhanced User Experience: By supporting realistic interactions and advanced NPCs, MetaGravity enhances the overall user experience in the metaverse. Imagine exploring a city where NPCs can give you directions, react to your presence, or even join you on adventures. This is just a glimpse of the potential MetaGravity can unlock.
Blockchain Projects Using MetaGravity’s HyperScale Technology
MetaGravity’s HyperScale technology has caught the attention of some of the most ambitious projects in the metaverse space. By implementing HyperScale, these projects aim to provide seamless experiences in vast, interconnected digital worlds, breaking through the limits that traditionally constrain multiplayer gaming.
Earth 2: Earth 2, known for its vision of a digital twin of our planet, has integrated MetaGravity’s HyperScale engine to handle a high volume of simultaneous users and to create a more responsive and immersive world. Earth 2’s ambition of allowing users to own and trade digital land, as well as interact in real-time within a geographically mapped digital replica of Earth, requires a robust infrastructure capable of supporting extensive data and user load. HyperScale enables Earth 2 to achieve this scale, allowing thousands of users to coexist and interact within the same shard, while maintaining a seamless experience (Read Article about Metagravity and Earth 2) .
Wilder World: Wilder World, a metaverse project focused on creating a photorealistic virtual universe, has adopted HyperScale to support its ambitious decentralized open-world experience. Wilder World’s stated emphasis on high-quality, immersive visuals, combined with vast explorable zones, integrates MetaGravity’s technology to ensure that players will experience no lag or disruptions, even in densely populated areas once their metaverse lands become available to roam on. The HyperScale engine will provide the scalability needed for Wilder World’s large-scale events, persistent user interactions, and player-driven economy (Read Article about Metagravity and Wilder World).
Other Projects and Strategic Collaborations: MetaGravity has also entered a partnership with WEMADE, a South Korean blockchain gaming giant, to integrate HyperScale in a suite of blockchain-powered games, enabling scalable, player-driven economies and ecosystems. This collaboration demonstrates MetaGravity’s goal of supporting a decentralized metaverse where players can transfer assets, avatars, and experiences across compatible worlds.
Edge of Chaos: MetaGravity’s Groundbreaking Metaverse Game
“Edge of Chaos” is MetaGravity’s flagship game, showcasing the company’s cutting-edge technology and vision for the future of virtual worlds. Designed to push the limits of what’s possible in the metaverse, Edge of Chaos combines a vast, immersive world with sophisticated mechanics that draw players into a true massive multiplayer online experience. Unlike conventional games, where scalability and interaction are restricted by technical constraints, Edge of Chaos demonstrates MetaGravity’s prowess in creating a fully scalable, realistic environment that can support thousands of players in a single shard (server), enabling seamless interaction in real-time.
Check out our video recording of one of the Edge of Chaos playtests. Keep in mind that the video quality does not showcase the photorealism seen in-game due to streaming and hardware limitations. The actual game is photorealistic and detailed. Thousands of players were battling at the same time during the playtest.
This initial version is a playtest for seeing how thousands of players battling together simultaneously affected performance. As such, there were no social features such as chat, etc. In the future, players will be able to create their own realms and have greater social features available. NFTs are available externally but currently don’t appear to have any influence within the Edge of Chaos game itself.
